How to find cheaper flights with ChatGPT

ChatGPT is not a secret airline database. Its real advantage is helping you search more intelligently: flexible dates, nearby airports, alternative routes and automated price monitoring.

The short versionUse ChatGPT for two separate jobs: first, to build a smarter flight-search strategy; second, to create a Scheduled task that checks again later and alerts you when the conditions you care about are met. Always verify the final fare and fare rules on the airline or booking provider before buying.

Step 1: Give ChatGPT enough constraints

A weak request like “find me a cheap flight” usually produces weak results. Give it the information a human travel researcher would need: origin, destination, date window, flexibility, nearby airports, number of stops, baggage needs, budget and currency.

Prompt 1 — initial flight search

Help me find the best current flight options for this trip:

Origin: [CITY / AIRPORT]
Destination: [CITY / AIRPORT]
Travel window: [DATES]
Flexibility: ± [X] days
Passengers: [NUMBER]
Checked baggage: [YES / NO]
Maximum stops: [NUMBER]
Budget: [AMOUNT + CURRENCY]

Check alternative dates, nearby airports and less obvious route combinations if they can materially reduce the total price or improve the itinerary.

Return the best options in a simple comparison table with: dates, route, airline(s), stops, approximate total price, baggage assumptions and where the price should be verified before purchase.

Do not assume a fare is still available if you cannot verify it. Clearly mark anything that needs a live price check.

Step 2: Ask it to search around the obvious route

The biggest savings often come from changing one variable rather than finding a “hidden fare.” Ask ChatGPT to test nearby departure or arrival airports, dates a few days earlier or later, one-stop routes, and combinations that a normal first search may miss. Then compare the total trip cost — not just the headline ticket price.

ExampleIf your destination is Lisbon, it can be worth checking Porto as well, then comparing the onward train or domestic travel cost. The same logic works for alternative airports around many major cities.

Step 3: Turn the search into a Scheduled task

ChatGPT can run recurring or monitoring tasks when Scheduled is available on your account. Open Scheduled or simply ask ChatGPT to create the task. Availability and limits depend on plan, app and version.

Prompt 2 — daily price monitoring

Every morning at 08:00, check flight options from Tel Aviv to Lisbon or Porto for my travel dates.

Notify me only if:
1. the total price drops below €250, OR
2. you find a meaningfully better option that is at least 15% cheaper than the best comparable option you found before.

Also check flexible dates and nearby airports when useful.

When you notify me, include the route, dates, airline(s), stops, approximate price, what changed, and a source where I can verify the live fare before booking.

Do not notify me if neither condition is met.

ChatGPT's official documentation says Scheduled tasks can run one-time or recurring work and monitor for changes; exact availability depends on the account and app. OpenAI: Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT.

What ChatGPT is good at — and what it is not

ChatGPT is excellent for structuring the search, generating alternatives, comparing trade-offs and monitoring conditions. It should not be treated as a guaranteed source of live inventory or as proof that a quoted fare is bookable. The final confirmation belongs on a live airline or booking page.
